On Suspiria and Beyond is a book-interview with cinematographer Luciano Tovoli AIC ASC, who has collaborated with directors such as Vittorio De Seta, Michelangelo Antonioni, Dario Argento, Maurice Pialat, Valerio Zurlini, Francis Veber, Andrej Tarkovskij, Ettore Scola, Julie Taymor, Barbet Schroeder and many others. Tovoli is also the creator of the European Federation of Cinematographers Imago. The volume retraces all the stages of making Suspiria, from test shots to printing. It describes in detail the making of various sequences, relations with the director, explores the cultural premises of this immortal work and the historical context of the struggle for innovation in the cinematography of the Seventies. Above all, it reveals Luciano Tovoli’s passion and tireless search for an expressive use of color in films, providing us with a first-hand experience of an incredible adventure in aesthetics.

Piercesare Stagni (L’Aquila, 1970) is a historian of the cinema and lecturer. He was trained at the Accademia dell’Immagine graduating cum laude in 2000 with a thesis on digital cinema. From 2001 to 2014 he was Artistic Director of the Cinematographic Institute “La Lanterna Magica” of L’Aquila. He teaches at several major schools of the sector, including the Accademia Internazionale per le Arti e le Scienze dell’Immagine, the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia Sede Abruzzo, the International Film Academy and, since 2015, is the creator and host of the television transmission Il cinema racconta. He was Artistic Director of the Festival Notte Noir and has contributed to the books Cinema. Storia e capolavori e Cinema. Star e protagonisti for the Panorama series “Grandi Arti Contemporanee”, as well as numerous volumes of the series I dizionari del cinema coordinated by Gabriele Lucci for Electa Mondadori. Assistant in international masterclasses of Francesco Rosi and Luciano Tovoli.

Valentina Valente (L’Aquila, 1982) is a photographer and historian of the cinema. She has a research doctorate (PhD) in History and Criticism of Musical Artistic & Theatre Heritage at the University of Padua. She was Adjunct Professor of Cinematographic Archive Management and Theory of the Cinema at Rome’s La Sapienza University where she currently holds a photographic workshop. She is the curator of the volume "Ascoltare il cinema. Studi sul suono nel film" (with Mauro Di Donato) and of the conference proceedings Arte fra vero e falso (with Mattia Vinco and Chiara Costa), has published several articles and paper at conferences on authors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Alain Resnais, Chris Marker, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Stanely Kubrick and Wim Wenders, papers on cinema theory (futurist theory, cinema and philosophy) and on television series. She has attended academic conferences and seminars and has curated ences for the University of Padua, the La Sapienza University of Rome and NECS - European Network for Cinema and Media Studies.
