Fabrizio Crisafulli, an Italian theatre director and visual artist, explores the concept of the dramaturgy of light, arguing that contemporary thought still confines lighting to a visual role, overlooking its temporal, active and discursive dimensions. Although the foundations laid by Adolphe Appia already pointed beyond this limitation, the autonomous capacity of light to construct meaning and dramaturgy remains rarely acknowledged. To prevent the term from being used merely nominally, the author calls for deeper conceptual and practical inquiry, exemplifying his approach through the light score of one of his theatre works, in which light operates as a structured, text-like discourse.
