Jörg Widmer è uno dei più importanti operatori di macchina e direttori della fotografia contemporanei. Specializzato nell'utilizzo della steadycam, in qualità di operatore di macchina o direttore della fotografia di seconda unità ha preso parte a film come Al di là delle nuvole di Wim Wenders e Michelangelo Antonioni, Il pianista di Roman Polanski, pluripremiato agli Oscar, il cult Good Bye Lenin di Wolfgang Becker, Babel di Alejandro Iñárritu, La pianista, Il nastro bianco e Amour di Michael Haneke, gli ultimi due entrambi premiati con la Palma d'Oro a Cannes, e Bastardi senza gloria di Quentin Tarantino. Nonché la prima stagione dell'acclamata serie Netflix tedesca Dark. Fra i film di cui ha firmato la fotografia spiccano il documentario Buena Vista Social Club e il docufilm 3D Pina di Wim Wenders, in quest’ultimo ha condiviso il ruolo con Helen Louvert. Ha iniziato a collaborare con Terrence Malick nei primi anni Duemila, facendo da operatore di steadycam e direttore della fotografia di seconda unità prima per The New World (2005), poi per la Palma d'oro The Tree of Life (2011), e per il trittico To the Wonder (2012), Knight of Cups (2015), film metacinematografico in cui Widmer, per decisione di Malick, appariva brevemente anche come attore nel ruolo di un fotografo, e Song to Song (2017). Se in questi primi cinque film era Emmanuel Lubezki l'autore della fotografia, nel più recente A Hidden Life, presentato al Festival di Cannes del 2019, Widmer ha assunto il ruolo di cinematographer. Ha inoltre fotografato The Book of Vision, prodotto esecutivamente da Malick e diretto dal suo discepolo Carlo S. Hintermann, presentato in apertura alla Settimana della Critica di Venezia 2020, e ha proseguito la sua collaborazione con Malick anche per The Way of the Wind, il nuovo progetto del regista texano incentrato sulla vita di Gesù.

Jörg Widmer is one of the most important contemporary camera operators and cinematographers. Specialized in the use of the Steadicam, as camera operator or 2nd unit dop he was involved in movies such as Beyond the Clouds by Wim Wenders and Michelangelo Antonioni, Roman Polanski’s Oscar winner The Pianist, Wolfgang Becker’s cult Good Bye Lenin, Alejandro Iñárritu’s Babel, Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, The Piano Teacher, The White Ribbon and Amour, all three directed by Michael Haneke and the latter two awarded by Cannes’ Palme d’Or, as well as the first season of acclaimed German Netflix series Dark. Among the movies he personally cinematographed, Wim Wenders’ two documentaries Buena Vista Social Club and Pina stand out; in the latter he shared credits with Helen Louvart, who had started the film. He started collaborating with Terrence Malick in 2004, serving as a Steadicam operator and 2nd unit director of photography first for The New World (2005), later for the Palme d’Or-winner The Tree of Life (2011) and the triptych To the Wonder (2012), Knight of Cups (2015), a metacinematographic work in which Malick made him also appear as an actor in the role of a photographer, and Song to Song (2017); whereas in these first five movies Emmanuel Lubezki was the main author of cinematography. In Malick’s actual latest movie A Hidden Life, presented in the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, Widmer was the main cinematographer. Widmer has cinematographed also The Book of Vision, produced by Malick and directed by his disciple Carlo S. Hintermann, which opened 2020 Venice Film Festival’s International Critics’ Week, and has continued his collaboration with Malick also for The Way of the Wind, an upcoming project from the Austin based director centered upon Jesus Christ’s life and parables.
